Met Releases Advice To Protect Windscreen Wipers

With more bad weather on the way, motorists have been urged by the Met Office to put old socks on their windscreen wipers!

As the UK recovers from Storm Babet which brought torrential rainfall and left parts of the country underwater, Brits are once again being told to prepare for bad weather, this time courtesy of Storm Ciaran.

Ahead of the worsening weather conditions, to help us prepare, the Met Office has released a list of tips and a few have raised one or two eyebrows!

Chief among them is the socks on the windscreen wipers pointer, which they say prevents them from sticking to your glass and breaking when you park overnight. If wipers stick to the glass and can’t move, it can cause the motor to overheat which causes the fuse to blow.

The broad-ranging advice was issued by the Met Office in partnership with the RAC, British Veterinary Association, Cycling UK, UK Health Security Agency, Natural Resources Wales, Holland & Barrett.

Met Office head of warnings, Chris Walsh said: 'When the clocks go back it's time to prepare for winter weather. Whether it's strong winds, cold spells or even ice and snow, there are simple and cost-effective things everyone can do now to prepare for winter weather.

‘There are plenty of useful and creative weather hacks out there that can help people to avoid disruption, but also make the most of winter weather’, he added.

Other Tips

Some other tips included in the #WeatherHacks guidance included packing a towel to remove toxic grit or rock salt from your dog's paws, as well as preparing a kit of essential items in case your home is hit by floods.

Across the country, river levels remain high and the ground saturated, with dozens of flood warnings. So any guidance aimed at helping people prepare for potential floods will be well received!

Protecting Yourself

As the weather gets colder, the stress on your windscreen can start to mount. In fact, winter is the time of year when windscreen repairs are most common.

This is why it makes sense to protect yourself with windscreen cover as this can help offset the costs of repairs and replacements, making it a valuable asset when dealing with all types of damage.

Many people who believed they were covered by their comprehensive policy are discovering they aren’t. So check your policy, and if you discover you’re not covered then it might be time to protect yourself to avoid any costly bills in the unfortunate event you need yours repaired.

Investing in windscreen cover is a wise decision for every vehicle owner. Not only does this protect you from unexpected repair or replacement costs, but cover for your windscreen will also provide peace of mind and ensure your vehicle’s safety remains a top priority.
